Embalmed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBC DEFE GHAH BCIC JKGK ELML MEBE ENBOThis is the street and the dwelling | A |
Let me count the houses o'er | B |
Yes one two three from the corner | B |
And the house that I love makes four | C |
- | |
That is the very window | D |
Where I used to see her head | E |
Bent over book or needle | F |
With ivy garlanded | E |
- | |
And the very loop of the curtain | G |
And the very curve of the vine | H |
Were full of the grace and the meaning | A |
Which was hers by some right divine | H |
- | |
I began to be glad at the corner | B |
And all the way to the door | C |
My heart outran my footsteps | I |
And frolicked and danced before | C |
- | |
In haste for the words of welcome | J |
The voice the repose and grace | K |
And the smile like a benediction | G |
Of that beautiful vanished face | K |
- | |
Now I pass the door and I pause not | E |
And I look the other way | L |
But ever a waft of fragrance | M |
Too subtle to name or stay | L |
- | |
Comes the thought of the gracious presence | M |
Which made that past time sweet | E |
And still to those who remember | B |
Embalms the house and the street | E |
- | |
Like the breath from some vase now empty | E |
Of a flowery shape unseen | N |
Which follows the path of its lover | B |
To tell where a rose has been | O |
