Embalmed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBC DEFE GHAH BCIC JKGK ELML MEBE ENBO

This is the street and the dwellingA
Let me count the houses o'erB
Yes one two three from the cornerB
And the house that I love makes fourC
-
That is the very windowD
Where I used to see her headE
Bent over book or needleF
With ivy garlandedE
-
And the very loop of the curtainG
And the very curve of the vineH
Were full of the grace and the meaningA
Which was hers by some right divineH
-
I began to be glad at the cornerB
And all the way to the doorC
My heart outran my footstepsI
And frolicked and danced beforeC
-
In haste for the words of welcomeJ
The voice the repose and graceK
And the smile like a benedictionG
Of that beautiful vanished faceK
-
Now I pass the door and I pause notE
And I look the other wayL
But ever a waft of fragranceM
Too subtle to name or stayL
-
Comes the thought of the gracious presenceM
Which made that past time sweetE
And still to those who rememberB
Embalms the house and the streetE
-
Like the breath from some vase now emptyE
Of a flowery shape unseenN
Which follows the path of its loverB
To tell where a rose has beenO
