Christmas. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBA DEFFDE GHIIGH JKLLBA DHMMHD

How did they keep his birthday thenA
The little fair Christ so long agoB
O many there were to be housed and fedC
And there was no place in the inn they saidC
So into the manger the Christ must goB
To lodge with the cattle and not with menA
-
The ox and the ass they munched their hayD
They munched and they slumbered wondering notE
And out in the midnight cold and blueF
The shepherds slept and the sheep slept tooF
Till the angels' song and the bright star rayD
Guided the wise men to the spotE
-
But only the wise men knelt and praisedG
And only the shepherds came to seeH
And the rest of the world cared not at allI
For the little Christ in the oxen's stallI
And we are angry and amazedG
That such a dull hard thing should beH
-
How do we keep his birthday nowJ
We ring the bells and we raise the strainK
We hang up garland everywhereL
And bid the tapers twinkle fairL
And feast and frolic and then we goB
Back to the Mine old lives againA
-
Are we so better then than theyD
Who failed the new born Christ to seeH
To them a helpless babe to usM
He shines a Saviour gloriousM
Our Lord our Friend our All yet weH
Are half asleep this Christmas dayD
