In covert of a leafy porchA
Where woodbine clingsB
And roses drop their crimson leavesC
He sits and singsB
With soft brown crest erect to hearD
And drooping wingsB
-
Shut in a narrow cage which barsE
His eager flightF
Shut in the darker prison houseG
Of blinded sightF
Alike to him are sun and starsE
The day the nightF
-
But all the fervor of high noonH
Hushed fragrant strongI
And all the peace of moonlit nightsJ
When nights are longI
And all the bliss of summer evesC
Breathe in his songI
-
The rustle of the fresh green woodsK
The hum of beeL
The joy of flight the perfumed waftM
Of blossoming treeL
The half forgotten rapturous thrillN
Of libertyL
-
All blend and mix while evermoreO
Now and againP
A plaintive puzzled cadence comesQ
A low refrainR
Caught from some shadowy memoryL
Of patient painR
-
In midnight black when all men sleepS
My singer wakesT
And pipes his lovely melodiesU
And trills and shakesT
The dark sky bends to listen butV
No answer makesT
-
O what is joy In vain we graspW
Her purple wingsB
Unwon unwooed she flits to dwellX
With humble thingsB
She shares my sightless singer's cageY
And so he singsB
