Oh yes I went over to Edmonstoun the other day and saw Johnny mooning around as usual He will never make his wayA
Letter of George KeatsB
-
-
Night falls the great jars glow against the darkC
Dark green dusk red and like a coiling snakeD
Writhing eternally in smoky gyresB
Great ropes of gorgeous vapor twist and turnE
Within them So the Eastern fishermanF
Saw the swart genie rise when the lead sealG
Scribbled with charms was lifted from the jarH
And well how went the tale Like this like thisB
-
No herbage broke the barren flats of landI
No winds dared loiter within smiling treesB
Nor were there any brooks on either handI
Only the dry bright sandI
Naked and golden lay before the seasB
-
One boat toiled noiselessly along the deepJ
The thirsty ripples dying silentlyK
Upon its track Far out the brown nets sweepJ
And night begins to creepJ
Across the intolerable mirror of the seaK
-
Twice the nets rise a trail with sea plants brownL
Distorted shells and rocks green mossed with slimeM
Nought else The fisher sick at heart kneels downL
Prayer may appease God's frownL
He thinks then kneeling casts for the third timeM
-
And lo an earthen jar bound round with brassB
Lies tangled in the cordage of his netN
About the bright waves gleam like shattered glassB
And where the sea's rim wasB
The sun dips flat and red about to setN
-
The prow grates on the beach The fishermanF
Stoops tearing at the cords that bind the sealG
Shall pearls roll out lustrous and white and wanO
Lapis carnelianO
Unheard of stones that make the sick mind reelG
-
With wonder of their beauty Rubies thenO
Green emeralds glittering like the eyes of beastsB
Poisonous opals good to madden menO
Gold bezants ten and tenO
Hard regal diamonds like kingly feastsB
-
He tugged the seal gave way A little smokeP
Curled like a feather in the darkening skyQ
A blinding gush of fire burst flamed and brokeP
A voice like a wind spokeP
Armored with light and turbaned terriblyK
-
A genie tramped the round earth underfootR
His head sought out the stars his cupped right handI
Made half the sky one darkness He was muteS
The sun a ripened fruitS
Drooped lower Scarlet eddied o'er the sandI
-
The genie spoke O miserable oneO
Thy prize awaits thee come and hug it closeB
A noble crown thy draggled nets have wonO
For this that thou hast doneO
Blessed are fools A gift remains for thoseB
-
His hand sought out his sword and lightnings flaredT
Across the sky in one great bloom of fireU
Poised like a toppling mountain it hung baredT
Suns that were jewels glaredT
Along its hilt The air burnt like a pyreU
-
Once more the genie spoke Something I oweV
To thee thou fool thou fool Come canst thou singW
Yea Sing then if thy song be brave then goV
Free and released or noV
Find first some task some overmastering thingW
I cannot do and find it speedilyK
For if thou dost not thou shalt surely dieQ
-
The sword whirled back The fisherman uproseB
And if at first his voice was weak with fearX
And his limbs trembled it was but a dozeB
And at the high song's closeB
He stood up straight His voice rang loud and clearX

The SongY
-
Last night the quays were lightedZ
Cressets of smoking pineO
Glared o'er the roaring marinersB
That drink the yellow wineO
-
Their song rolled to the raftersB
It struck the high stars paleA2
Such worth was in their discourseB
Such wonder in their taleA2
-
Blue borage filled the clinking cupsB
The murky night grew wanO
Till one rose crowned with laurel leavesB
That was an outland manO
-
Come let us drink to war said heK
The torch of the sacked townO
The swan's bath and the wolf shipsB
And Harald of renownO
-
Yea while the milk was on his lipsB
Before the day was bornO
He took the Almayne Kaiser's headB2
To be his drinking hornO
-
Yea while the down was on his chinO
Or yet his beard was grownO
He broke the gates of MicklegarthC2
And stole the lion throneO
-
Drink to Harald king of the worldD2
Lord of the tongue and the trothC2
To the bellowing horns of OstfrieslandD2
And the trumpets of the GothC2
-
Their shouts rolled to the raftersB
The drink horns crashed and rangE2
And all their talk was a clangor of warF2
As swords together sangE2
-
But dimly through the deep nightD2
Where stars like flowers shoneO
A passionate shape came glidingW
I saw one thing aloneO
-
I only saw my young loveG2
Shining against the darkC
The whiteness of her raimentD2
The head that bent to harkC
-
I only saw my young loveG2
Like flowers in the sunO
Her hands like waxen petalsB
Where yawning poppies runO
-
I only felt there chrysmalA2
Against my cheek her breathC2
Though all the winds were bayingW
And the sky bright with DeathC2
-
Red sparks whirled up the chimneyK
A hungry flaught of flameH2
And a lean man from Greece aroseB
Thrasyllos was his nameH2
-
I praise all noble wines he criedD2
Green robes of tissue fineO
Peacocks and apes and ivoryK
And Homer's sea loud lineO
-
Statues and rings and carven gemsB
And the wise crawling seaK
But most of all the crowns of kingsB
The rule they wield therebyQ
-
Power fired power blank and brightD2
A fit hilt for the handD2
The one good sword for a freemanO
While yet the cold stars standD2
-
Their shouts rolled to the raftersB
The air was thick with wineO
I only knew her deep eyesB
And felt her hand in mineO
-
Softly as quiet waterU
One finger touched my cheekI2
Her face like gracious moonlightD2
I might not move nor speakI2
-
I only saw that beautyK
I only felt that formJ2
There in the silken darknessB
God wot my heart was warmJ2
-
Their shouts rolled to the raftersB
Another chief beganO
His slit lips showed him for a HunO
He was an evil manO
-
Sing to the joys of women he yelledD2
The hot delicious tentsB
The soft couch and the white limbsB
The air a steam of scentsB
-
His eyes gleamed and he wet his lipsB
The rafters shook with cheersB
As he sang of woman who is man's slaveK2
For all unhonored yearsB
-
Whether the wanton laughs amainO
With one white shoulder bareL2
Or in a sacked room you unbindD2
Some crouching maiden's hairL2
-
This is the only good for manO
Like spices of the SouthC2
To see the glimmering body laidD2
As pasture to his mouthC2
-
To leave no lees within the cupM2
To see and take and rendD2
To lap a girl's limbs up like wineO
And laugh knowing the endD2
-
Only like low still breathingW
I heard one voice one wordD2
And hot speech poured upon my lipsB
As my hands held a swordD2
-
Fools thrice fools of lust I criedD2
Your eyes are blind to seeK
Eternal beauty moving farH
More glorious than horns of warF2
But though my eyes were one blind scarH
That sight is shown to meK
-
You nuzzle at the ivory sideD2
You clasp the golden headD2
Fools fools who chatter and singW
You have taken the sign of a terrible thingW
You have drunk down God with your beeswingW
And broken the saints for breadD2
-
For God moves darklyK
In silence and in stormJ2
But in the body of womanO
He shows one burning formJ2
-
For God moves blindlyK
In darkness and in dreadD2
But in the body of womanO
He raises up the deadD2
-
Gracile and straight as birchesK
Swift as the questing birdsK
They fill true lovers' drink horns upM2
Who speak not having no wordsK
-
Love is not delicate toyingW
A slim and shimmering meshN2
It is two souls wrenched into oneO
Two bodies made one fleshN2
-
Lust is a sprightly servantD2
Gallant where wines are pouredD2
Love is a bitter masterU
Love is an iron lordD2
-
Satin ease of the bodyK
Fattened sloth of the handsK
These and their like he will not sendD2
Only immortal fires to rendD2
And the world's end is your jA
