The congressmen came out to see Bull RunA
The congressmen who like free shows and spectaclesB
They brought their wives and carriages alongC
They brought their speeches and their picnic lunchD
Their black constituent hats and their devotionA
Some even brought a little whiskey tooE
A little whiskey is a comforting thingF
For congressmen in the sun in the heat of the sunA
The bearded congressmen with orator's mouthsG
The fine clean shaved Websterian congressmenH
Come out to see the gladiator's showI
Like Iliad gods wrapped in the sacred cloudJ
Of Florida water wisdom and bay rumK
Of free cigars democracy and votesL
That lends such portliness to congressmenH
The gates fly wide the bronze troop marches outM
Into the stripped and deadly circus ringF
'Ave Caesar ' the cry goes up and shakesN
The purple awning over Caesar's seatO
'Ave Caesar Ave O congressmenH
We who are about to dieP
Salute you congressmen 'Q
Eleven StatesR
New York Rhode Island MaineS
Connecticut Michigan and the gathered WestT
Salute you congressmenH
The red fezzed Fire Zouaves flamingo brightU
Salute you congressmenH
The raw boys still in their civilian clothesV
Salute you congressmenH
The Second Wisconsin in its homespun greyW
Salute you congressmenH
The Garibaldi Guards in cocksfeather hatsX
Salute you congressmenH
The Second Ohio with their Bedouin capsY
Salute you congressmenH
Sherman's brigade grey headed HeintzelmanA
Ricketts' and Griffin's doomed and valiant gunsZ
The tough hard bitten regulars of SykesA2
Who covered the retreat with the MarinesB2
Burnside and Porter Wilcox and McDowellC2
All the vast unprepared militia massD2
Of boys in red and yellow Zouave pantsE2
Who carried peach preserves inside their kitsF2
And dreamt of being generals overnightU
The straggling companies where every manG2
Was a sovereign and a voter the slack regimentsH2
Where every company marched a different stepI2
The clumsy and unwieldy new brigadesJ2
Not yet distempered into battle wormsK2
The whole huge innocent army ready to fightU
But only half taught in the tricks of fightingF
Ready to die like picture postcard boysL2
While fighting still had banners and a swordM2
And just as ready to run in blind mob panicN2
Salutes you with a vast and thunderous cryP
Ave Caesar Ave O congressmenH
Ave O Iliad gods who forced the fightU
You bring your carriages and your picnic lunchD
To cheer us in our needO2
You come with speechesP2
Your togas smell of heroism and bay rumK
You are the people and the voice of the peopleC2
And when the fight is done your carriagesQ2
Will bear you safely through the streaming routM
Of broken troops throwing their guns awayW
You come to see the gladiator's showI
But from a high place as befits the wiseR2
You will not see the long windrows of menS2
Strewn like dead pears before the Henry HouseT2
Or the stone wall of Jackson breathe its parchedU2
Devouring breath upon the failing chargeV2
Ave Caesar ave O congressmenH
Cigar smoke wraps you in a godlike cloudJ
And if you are not to depart from usW2
As easily and divinely as you cameX2
It hardly mattersY2
Fighting Joe Hooker onceZ2
Said with that tart unbridled tongue of hisQ2
That made so many needless enemiesA3
'Who ever saw a dead cavalryman 'Q
The phraseB3
Stings with a needle sharpness just or notC3
But even he was never heard to sayW
'Who ever saw a dead congressman 'Q
And yet he was a man with a sharp tongueD3
