Rain After A Vaudeville Show Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJ KLKLMMNNOOThe last pose flickered failed The screen's dead white | A |
Glared in a sudden flooding of harsh light | A |
Stabbing the eyes and as I stumbled out | B |
The curtain rose A fat girl with a pout | B |
And legs like hams began to sing His Mother | C |
Gusts of bad air rose in a choking smother | C |
Smoke the wet steam of clothes the stench of plush | D |
Powder cheap perfume mingled in a rush | D |
I stepped into the lobby and stood still | E |
Struck dumb by sudden beauty body and will | E |
Cleanness and rapture excellence made plain | F |
The storming thrashing arrows of the rain | F |
Pouring and dripping on the roofs and rods | G |
Smelling of woods and hills and fresh turned sods | G |
Black on the sidewalks gray in the far sky | H |
Crashing on thirsty panes on gutters dry | H |
Hurrying the crowd to shelter making fair | I |
The streets the houses and the heat soaked air | I |
Merciful holy charging sweeping flashing | J |
It smote the soul with a most iron clashing | J |
Like dragons' eyes the street lamps suddenly gleamed | K |
Yellow and round and dim low globes of flame | L |
And scarce perceived the clouds' tall banners streamed | K |
Out of the petty wars the daily shame | L |
Beauty strove suddenly and rose and flowered | M |
I gripped my coat and plunged where awnings lowered | M |
Made one with hissing blackness caught embraced | N |
By splendor and by striving and swift haste | N |
Spring coming in with thunderings and strife | O |
I stamped the ground in the strong joy of life | O |
