If you refuse me once and think againA
I will complainB
You are deceiv'd love is no work of artC
It must be got and bornD
Not made and wornD
By every one that hath a heartC
-
Or do you think they more than once can dieE
Whom you denyE
Who tell you of a thousand deaths a dayF
Like the old poets feignB
And tell the painB
They met but in the common wayF
-
Or do you think 't too soon to yieldG
And quit the fieldG
Nor is that right they yield that first entreatG
Once one may crave for loveH
But more would proveI
This heart too little that too greatG
-
Oh that I were all soul that I might proveI
For you as fit a loveH
As you are for an angel for I knowJ
None but pure spirits are fit loves for youK
-
You are all ethereal there's in you no drossL
Nor any part that's grossM
Your coarsest part is like a curious lawnN
The vestal relics for a covering drawnN
-
Your other parts part of the purest fireO
That e'er Heav'n did inspireP
Makes every thought that is refin'd by itG
A quintessence of goodness and of witG
-
Thus have your raptures reach'd to that degreeQ
In love's philosophyQ
That you can figure to yourself a fireO
Void of all heat a love without desireO
-
Nor in divinity do you go lessR
You think and you professR
That souls may have a plenitude of joyS
Although their bodies meet not to employS
-
But I must needs confess I do not findG
The motions of my mindG
So purified as yet but at the bestG
My body claims in them an interestG
-
I hold that perfect joy makes all our partsT
As joyful as our heartsT
Our senses tell us if we please not themU
Our love is but a dotage or a dreamV
-
How shall we then agree you may descendG
But will not to my endG
I fain would tune my fancy to your keyQ
But cannot reach to that obstructed wayF
-
There rests but this that whilst we sorrow hereW
Our bodies may draw nearX
And when no more their joys they can extendG
Then let our souls begin where they did endG
