Fatherland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCBB DEFF BBGG HIAAJJKK AABB

THE BRAVE old land of deed and songA
Of gentle hearts and spirits strongA
Of queenly maids and heroes grandB
Of equal laws our FatherlandB
-
Though born beneath a brighter sunC
Shall we forget the marvels doneC
By soul outspoken blood outpouredB
By bard and patriot song and swordB
-
Forget how firm and true our siresD
Still lighted by their battle firesE
Gainst kingly power and kingly crimeF
Long struggled in the darkened timeF
-
How in a rolling sea they stoodB
Where every wave was freemen s bloodB
Shall we forget the time of strifeG
When freedom s only price was lifeG
-
Shall Cromwell s memory Milton s lyreH
Not kindle mong us souls of fireI
Not raise in us a spirit strongA
High scorn of shams quick hate of wrongA
Shall we not learn Australians bornJ
To smile on tinselled power our scornJ
At least a freeman s pride to tryK
When tinselled power would bend or buyK
-
The brave old land of deed and songA
We ne er will do her memories wrongA
For freedom here we ll firmly standB
As stood our sires for FatherlandB
