The King Of England Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEFDE GHGHIJKIJK LMLMNOPNOP QRQRSTESTE

In that eclipse of noon when joy was hushedA
Like the bird's song beneath unnatural nightB
And Terror's footfall in the darkness crushedA
The rose imperial of our delightB
Then even then though no man cried 'He comes 'C
And no man turned to greet him passing thereD
With phantom heralds challenging renownE
And silent throbbing drumsF
I saw the King of England hale and fairD
Ride out with a great train through London townE
-
Unarmed he rode but in his ruddy shieldG
The lions bore the dint of many a lanceH
And up and down his mantle's azure fieldG
Were strewn the lilies plucked in famous FranceH
Before him went with banner floating wideI
The yeoman breed that served his honour bestJ
And mixed with these his knights of noble bloodK
But in the place of prideI
His admirals in billowy lines abreastJ
Convoyed him close like galleons on the floodK
-
Full of a strength unbroken showed his faceL
And his brow calm with youth's unclouded dawnM
But round his lips were lines of tenderer graceL
Such as no hand but Time's hath ever drawnM
Surely he knew his glory had no partN
In dull decay nor unto Death must bendO
Yet surely too of lengthening shadows dreamedP
With sunset in his heartN
So brief his beauty now so near the endO
And now so old and so immortal seemedP
-
O King among the living these shall hailQ
Sons of thy dust that shall inherit theeR
O King of men that die though we must failQ
Thy life is breathed from thy triumphant seaR
O man that servest men by right of birthS
Our hearts' content thy heart shall also keepT
Thou too with us shalt one day lay thee downE
In our dear native earthS
Full sure the King of England while we sleepT
For ever rides abroad through London townE
