Deep embowered beside the forest riverA
Where the flame of sunset only fallsB
Lapped in silence lies the House of DyingC
House of them to whom the twilight callsB
-
There within when day was near to endingC
By her lord a woman young and strongD
By his chief a songman old and strickenE
Watched together till the hour of songD
-
'O my songman now the bow is brokenE
Now the arrows one by one are spedF
Sing to me the song of SrahmandaziB
Srahmandazi home of all the dead '-
-
Then the songman flinging wide his songnetF
On the last token laid his master's handF
While he sang the song of SrahmandaziB
None but dying men can understandF
-
'Yonder sun that fierce and fiery heartedF
Marches down the sky to vanish soonG
At the self same hour in SrahmandaziB
Rises pallid like the rainy moonG
-
'There he sees the heroes by their riverA
Where the great fish daily upward swimH
Yet they are but shadows hunting shadowsB
Phantom fish in waters drear and dimH
-
'There he sees the kings among their headmenG
Women weaving children playing gamesB
Yet they are but shadows ruling shadowsB
Phantom folk with dim forgotten namesB
-
'Bid farewell to all that most thou lovestF
Tell thy heart thy living life is doneG
All the days and deeds of SrahmandaziB
Are not worth an hour of yonder sunG
-
Dreamily the chief from out the songnetF
Drew his hand and touched the woman's headF
'Know they not then love in SrahmandaziB
Has a king no bride among the dead '-
-
Then the songman answered 'O my masterA
Love they know but none may learn it thereI
Only souls that reach that land togetherA
Keep their troth and find the twilight fairI
-
'Thou art still a king and at thy passingC
By thy latest word must all abideF
If thou willest here am I thy songmanG
If thou lovest here is she thy bride '-
-
Hushed and dreamy lay the House of DyingC
Dreamily the sunlight upward failedF
Dreamily the chief on eyes that loved himH
Looked with eyes the coming twilight veiledF
-
Then he cried 'My songman I am passingC
Let her live her life is but begunG
All the days and nights of SrahmandaziB
Are not worth an hour of yonder sun '-
-
Yet when there within the House of DyingC
The last silence held the sunset airI
Not alone he came to SrahmandaziB
Not alone she found the twilight fairI
-
While the songman far beneath the forestF
Sang of Srahmandazi all night throughJ
'Lovely be thy name O Land of shadowsB
Land of meeting Land of all the true '-
