'The sleep that Tippoo Sahib sleepsA
Heeds not the cry of manB
The faith that Tippoo Sahib keepsA
No judge on earth may scanB
He is the lord of whom ye holdC
Spirit and sense and limbD
Fetter and chain are all ye gainE
Who dared to plead with him 'F
-
Baird was bonny and Baird was youngG
His heart was strong as steelH
But life and death in the balance hungG
For his wounds were ill to healH
'Of fifty chains the Sultan gaveI
We have filled but forty nineJ
We dare not fail of the perfect taleK
For all Golconda's mine '-
-
That was the hour when Lucas firstL
Leapt to his long renownM
Like summer rains his anger burstL
And swept their scruples downM
'Tell ye the lord to whom ye crouchN
His fetters bite their fillO
To save your oath I'll wear them bothP
And step the lighter still '-
-
The seasons came the seasons passedQ
They watched their fellows dieR
But still their thought was forward castQ
Their courage still was highR
Through tortured days and fevered nightsS
Their limbs alone were weakT
And year by year they kept their cheerU
And spoke as freemen speakT
-
But once a year on the fourth of JuneV
Their speech to silence diedW
And the silence beat to a soundless tuneV
And sang with a wordless prideW
Till when the Indian stars were brightX
And bells at home would ringY
To the fetters' clank they rose and drankZ
'England God save the King '-
-
The years came and the years wentA2
The wheel full circle rolledC
The tyrant's neck must yet be bentA2
The price of blood be toldC
The city yet must hear the roarB2
Of Baird's avenging gunsC2
And see him stand with lifted handD2
By Tippoo Sahib's sonsC2
-
The lads were bonny the lads were youngG
But he claimed a pitiless debtE2
Life and death in the balance hungG
They watched it swing and setE2
They saw him search with sombre eyesF2
They knew the place he soughtG2
They saw him feel for the hilted steelH
They bowed before his thoughtG2
-
But he he saw the prison thereH2
In the old quivering heatI2
Where merry hearts had met despairH2
And died without defeatI2
Where feeble hands had raised the cupJ2
For feebler lips to drainE
And one had worn with smiling scornK2
His double load of painE
-
'The sleep that Tippoo Sahib sleepsA
Hears not the voice of manB
The faith that Tippoo Sahib keepsA
No earthly judge may scanB
For all the wrong your father wroughtG2
Your father's sons are freeL2
Where Lucas lay no tongue shall sayM2
That Mercy bound not me '-
