Ionicus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCD EFEFGHGD IJIJKHKD

With failing feet and shoulders bowedA
Beneath the weight of happier daysB
He lagged among the heedless crowdA
Or crept along suburban waysB
But still through all his heart was youngC
A courage a pride a rapture sprungC
Of the strength and splendour of England's warD
-
From ill requited toil he turnedE
To ride with Picton and with PackF
Among his grammars inly burnedE
To storm the Afghan mountain trackF
When midnight chimed before QuebecG
He watched with Wolfe till he morning starH
At noon he saw from Victory's deckG
The sweep and splendour of England's warD
-
Beyond the book his teaching spedI
He left on whom he taught the traceJ
Of kinship with the deathless deadI
And faith in all the Island raceJ
He passed his life a tangle seemedK
His age from fame and power was farH
But his heart was night to the end and dreamedK
Of the sound and splendour of England's warD
