A Letter From The Front Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFG HGIBJHKBLHMNHOPBQ RS

I was out early to day spying aboutA
From the top of a haystack such a lovely morningB
And when I mounted again to canter backC
I saw across a field in the broad sunlightD
A young Gunner Subaltern stalking alongE
With a rook rifle held at the read and would you believe itF
A domestic cat soberly marching beside himG
-
So I laughed and felt quite well disposed to the youngsterH
And shouted out the top of the morning to himG
And wished him Good sport and then I rememberedI
My rank and his and what I ought to be doingB
And I rode nearer and added I can only supposeJ
You have not seen the Commander in Chief's orderH
Forbidding English officers to annoy their AlliesK
By hunting and shootingB
But he stood and salutedL
And said earnestly I beg your pardon SirH
I was only going out to shoot a sparrowM
To feed my cat withN
So there was the whole pictureH
The lovely early morning the occasional shellO
Screeching and scattering past us the empty landscapeP
Empty except for the young Gunner salutingB
And the cat anxiously watching his every movementQ
-
I may be wrong or I may have told it badlyR
But it struck me as being extremely ludicrousS
