Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDEFF GHGIJKJK| The road is thronged with women soldiers pass | A |
| And halt but never see them yet they're here | B |
| A patient crowd along the sodden grass | A |
| Silent worn out with waiting sick with fear | C |
| The road goes crawling up a long hillside | D |
| All ruts and stones and sludge and the emptied dregs | E |
| Of battle thrown in heaps Here where they died | D |
| Are stretched big bellied horses with stiff legs | E |
| And dead men bloody fingered from the fight | F |
| Stare up at caverned darkness winking white | F |
| - | |
| You in the bomb scorched kilt poor sprawling Jock | G |
| You tottered here and fell and stumbled on | H |
| Half dazed for want of sleep No dream could mock | G |
| Your reeling brain with comforts lost and gone | I |
| You did not feel her arms about your knees | J |
| Her blind caress her lips upon your head | K |
| Too tired for thoughts of home and love and ease | J |
| The road would serve you well enough for bed | K |
