The Gardener Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEE FFBB GGHH IICC

The gardener does not love to talkA
He makes me keep the gravel walkA
And when he puts his tools awayB
He locks the door and takes the keyC
-
Away behind the currant rowD
Where no one else but cook may goD
Far in the plots I see him digE
Old and serious brown and bigE
-
He digs the flowers green red and blueF
Nor wishes to be spoken toF
He digs the flowers and cuts the hayB
And never seems to want to playB
-
Silly gardener summer goesG
And winter comes with pinching toesG
When in the garden bare and brownH
You must lay your barrow downH
-
Well now and while the summer staysI
To profit by these garden daysI
O how much wiser you would beC
To play at Indian wars with meC

Poet's note: This poem is written by R.L Stevenson. He used to be a sickly child and during his summer holidays, he went to his relatives' house. He was a lonely child as he didn't have any playmates. He wished the gardener would play with him but the gardener took no interest in him.
