They Went Forth To Battle, But They Always Fell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAABBAA CDCEDDCC ADAADDAA

They went forth to battle but they always fellA
Their eyes were fixed above the sullen shieldsB
Nobly they fought and bravely but not wellA
And sank heart wounded by a subtle spellA
They knew not fear that to the foeman yieldsB
They were not weak as one who vainly wieldsB
A futile weapon yet the sad scrolls tellA
How on the hard fought field they always fellA
-
It was a secret music that they heardC
A sad sweet plea for pity and for peaceD
And that which pierced the heart was but a wordC
Though the white breast was red lipped where the swordE
Pressed a fierce cruel kiss to put surceaseD
On its hot thirst but drank a hot increaseD
Ah they by some strange troubling doubt were stirredC
And died for hearing what no foeman heardC
-
They went forth to battle but they always fellA
Their might was not the might of lifted spearsD
Over the battle clamor came a spellA
Of troubling music and they fought not wellA
Their wreaths are willows and their tribute tearsD
Their names are old sad stories in men's earsD
Yet they will scatter the red hordes of HellA
Who went to battle forth and always fellA
