To Miss --, Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB BBCCDDEEFGHHEIJJKKLL MNBBOOPPQPRRSSPP

On her playing upon the harpsichord inA
a room hung with flower pieces of her own paintingB
-
When Stella strikes the tuneful stringB
In scenes of imitated SpringB
Where beauty lavishes her powersC
On beds of never fading flowersC
And pleasure propagates aroundD
Each charm of modulated soundD
Ah think not in the dangerous hourE
The nymph fictitious as the flowerE
But shun rash youth the gay alcoveF
Nor tempt the snares of wily loveG
When charms thus press on every senseH
What thought of flight or of defenceH
Deceitful hope and vain desireE
For ever flutter o'er her lyreI
Delighting as the youth draws nighJ
To point the glances of her eyeJ
And forming with unerring artK
New chains to hold the captive heartK
But on those regions of delightL
Might truth intrude with daring flightL
Could Stella sprightly fair and youngM
One moment hear the moral songN
Instruction with her flowers might springB
And wisdom warble from her stringB
Mark when from thousand mingled dyesO
Thou seest one pleasing form ariseO
How active light and thoughtful shadeP
In greater scenes each other aidP
Mark when the different notes agreeQ
In friendly contrarietyP
How passion's well accorded strifeR
Gives all the harmony of lifeR
Thy pictures shall thy conduct frameS
Consistent still though not the sameS
Thy music teach the nobler artP
To tune the regulated heartP
