The Young Author Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIFF JKLLMMFFFFNNOO

When first the peasant long inclined to roamA
Forsakes his rural sports and peaceful homeA
Pleas'd with the scene the smiling ocean yieldsB
He scorns the verdant meads and flowery fieldsB
Then dances jocund o'er the watery wayC
While the breeze whispers and the streamers playC
Unbounded prospects in his bosom rollD
And future millions lift his rising soulD
In blissful dreams he digs the golden mineE
And raptured sees the new found ruby shineE
Joys insincere thick clouds invade the skiesF
Loud roar the billows high the waves ariseF
Sickening with fear he longs to view the shoreG
And vows to trust the faithless deep no moreG
So the Young Author panting after fameH
And the long honours of a lasting nameH
Intrusts his happiness to human kindI
More false more cruel than the seas or windI
'Toil on dull crowd' in ecstasies he criesF
'For wealth or title perishable prizeF
While I those transitory blessings scornJ
Secure of praise from ages yet unborn 'K
This thought once form'd all counsel comes too lateL
He flies to press and hurries on his fateL
Swiftly he sees the imagined laurels spreadM
And feels the unfading wreath surround his headM
Warn'd by another's fate vain youth be wiseF
Those dreams were Settle's once and Ogilby'sF
The pamphlet spreads incessant hisses riseF
To some retreat the baffled writer fliesF
Where no sour critics snarl no sneers molestN
Safe from the tart lampoon and stinging jestN
There begs of Heaven a less distinguish'd lotO
Glad to be hid and proud to be forgotO
