Alas with swift and silent paceA
Impatient time rolls on the yearB
The Seasons change and Nature's faceA
Now sweetly smiles now frowns severeB
-
'Twas Spring 'twas Summer all was gayC
Now Autumn bends a cloudy browD
The flowers of Spring are swept awayC
And Summer fruits desert the boughD
-
The verdant leaves that play'd on highE
And wanton'd on the western breezeF
Now trod in dust neglected lieE
As Boreas strips the bending treesF
-
The fields that waved with golden grainG
As russet heaths are wild and bareH
Not moist with dew but drench'd in rainG
Nor health nor pleasure wanders thereH
-
No more while through the midnight shadeI
Beneath the moon's pale orb I strayC
Soft pleasing woes my heart invadeI
As Progne pours the melting layC
-
From this capricious clime she soarsJ
O would some god but wings supplyE
To where each morn the Spring restoresJ
Companion of her flight I'd tryE
-
Vain wish me fate compels to bearH
The downward season's iron reignG
Compels to breathe the polluted airH
And shiver on a blasted plainG
-
What bliss to life can Autumn yieldK
If glooms and showers and storms prevailL
And Ceres flies the naked fieldK
And flowers and fruits and Phoebus failL
-
Oh what remains what lingers yetM
To cheer me in the darkening hourN
The grape remains the friend of witO
In love and mirth of mighty powerN
-
Haste press the clusters fill the bowlP
Apollo shoot thy parting rayC
This gives the sunshine of the soulP
This god of health and verse and dayC
-
Still still the jocund train shall flowQ
The pulse with vigorous rapture beatR
My Stella with new charms shall glowQ
And every bliss in wine shall meetR
