Religion Of Hudibras, The Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEFGHIIFFEFJKLM NNOOPPBBQRSSTTUUGHVW XX

For his religion it was fitA
To match his learning and his witA
'Twas Presbyterian true blueB
For he was of that stubborn crewB
Of errant saints whom all men grantC
To be the true church militantD
Such as do build their faith uponE
The holy text of pike and gunF
Decide all controversies byG
Infallible artilleryH
And prove their doctrine orthodoxI
By apostolic blows and knocksI
Call fire and sword and desolationF
A godly thorough reformationF
Which always must be carried onE
And still be doing never doneF
As if religion were intendedJ
For nothing else but to be mendedK
A sect whose chief devotion liesL
In odd perverse antipathiesM
In falling out with that or thisN
And finding somewhat still amissN
More peevish cross and spleneticO
Than dog distract or monkey sickO
That with more care keep holy dayP
The wrong than others the right wayP
Compound for sins they are inclin'd toB
By damning those they have no mind toB
Still so perverse and oppositeQ
As if they worshipped God for spiteR
The self same thing they will abhorS
One way and long another forS
Free will they one way disavowT
Another nothing else allowT
All piety consists thereinU
In them in other men all sinU
Rather than fail they will defyG
That which they love most tenderlyH
Quarrel with minc'd pies and disparageV
Their best and dearest friend plum porridgeW
Fat pig and goose itself opposeX
And blaspheme custard through the noseX
