Power Against Power Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDC EFGF HIJI KLML NOPO QRSR

Nathaniel HawthorneA
-
-
Where spells were wrought he sat aloneB
The wizard touching minds of menC
Through far swung avenues of powerD
And proudly held the magic penC
-
By the dark wall a white Shape gleamsE
By morning's light a Shadow fallsF
Is it a servant of his brainG
Or Power that to his power callsF
-
By morning's light the Shadow loomsH
And watches with relentless eyesI
In night gloom holds the glimmering lampJ
While the pen ever slower fliesI
-
By the dark wall it beckons stillK
By evening light it darkly staysL
The wizard looks and his great lifeM
Thrills with the sense of finished daysL
-
A Shape so ghost like by the sunN
With smiles that chill as dusks descendO
The glancing wizard stern and paleP
Admits the presence of the EndO
-
Health has forsaken death is nearQ
The hand moves slower eyes grow dimR
The End approaches and the manS
Dreams of no spell for quelling HimR
