The old man comes out on the hillA
and looks down to recall earlier daysB
in the valley He sees the stream shineC
the church stand hears the litter ofD
children's voices A chill in the fleshE
tells him that death is not far offF
now it is the shadow under the great boughsG
of life His garden has herbs growingH
The kestrel goes by with fresh preyI
in its claws The wind scatters the scentJ
of wild beans The tractor operatesK
on the earth's body His grandson is thereL
ploughing his young wife fetches himM
cakes and tea and a dark smile It is wellN
