Evans Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHI JKLMNOP Q

Evans Yes many a timeA
I came down his bare flightB
Of stairs into the gaunt kitchenC
With its wood fire where crickets sangD
Accompaniment to the black kettle sE
Whine and so into the coldF
Dark to smother in the thick tideG
Of night that drifted about the wallsH
Of his stark farm on the hill ridgeI
-
It was not the dark filling my eyesJ
And mouth appalled me not even the dripK
Of rain like blood from the one treeL
Weather tortured It was the darkM
Silting the veins of that sick manN
I left stranded upon the vastO
And lonely shore of his bleak bedP

M. McLeary Graham : I first encountered this poem in school over 30 years ago. I had an emotional reaction then, and a more intense reaction now as I see how Evans foreshadows the very personal and sad epic of watching a loved one slowly leave this life.
