Roland John Books, Roland John poetry book The Life and Ballets of Lev Ivanov Authors: Roland John Wiley
Publisher: Oxford University Press on Demand
Published Date: 1997
Categories: Biography & Autobiography
The Life and Works of Lev Ivanov is the first book-length study in any language about this Russian artist - Marius Petipa's colleague and Tchaikovsky's collaborator - who is widely celebrated and yet virtually unknown. It follows Ivanov from his infancy in a St Petersburg foundling homethrough his training in the Imperial Theatre School and his celebrity marriage, to a career as a dancer, regisseur, and choreographer in the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet. Ivanov's artistic world is described, as is his legacy - some dozen works, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the famousdances from Prince Igor - which inspired Mikhail Fokine in the next generation. The book is richly documented, including the first complete publication of Ivanov's memoirs, and hundreds of citations, many published here for the first time, from state documents, reminiscences, and criticism.

Roland John Books, Roland John poetry book John Holt Authors: Roland Meighan
Publisher: A&C Black
Published Date: 2014-10-23
Categories: Education
John Holt, the American educator, was passionate about the need for alternatives to traditional institutional schooling, seeing schools as often hindering children from learning rather than helping them; he became an important proponent of homeschooling or 'unschooling', was a pioneer in youth rights theory and had a profound influence on school reform in particular and educational philosophy in general. Here, Roland Meighan challenges the often held notion that Holt's work was 'romantic' and impractical within the context of compulsory schooling. He brings together the work and thinking of John Holt into applicable theory for education students, enabling readers to appreciate the view that individuals outside the education system can influence and change what is happening within it.

Roland John Books, Roland John poetry book Tchaikovsky's Ballets Authors: Roland John Wiley
Publisher: Oxford University Press on Demand
Published Date: 1985
Categories: Music
Tchaikovsky's Ballets combines analysis of the music of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker with a description based on rare and not easily accessible documents of the first productions of these works in imperial Russia. Essential background concerning the ballet audience, the collaboration of composer and ballet-master, and Moscow in the 1860s leads into an account of the first production of Swan Lake in 1877. A discussion of the theatre reforms initiated by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, Director of the Imperial Theatres and Tchaikovsky's patron, prepares us for a study of the still-famous 1890 production of Sleeping Beauty, Tchaikovsky's first collaboration with the choreographer Marius Petipa. Professor Wiley then explains how Nutcracker, which followed two years after Sleeping Beauty, was seen by its producers and audiences in a much less favourable light in 1882 than it is now. The final chapter discusses the celebrated revival of Swan Lake in 1985 by Petipa and Leve Ivanov.

Roland John Books, Roland John poetry book A century of Russian ballet Authors: Roland John Wiley
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Published Date: 1990
Categories: Performing Arts
This collection of original documents, many appearing in English for the first time, presents a compelling picture of a century of Russian ballet. The documents, which include the printed libretti of Didelot, Taglioni, Perrot, St-Leon, Petipa, and Fokine, convey an accurate outline of balletic conventions in nineteenth-century Russia, and describe techniques of stagecraft, the social setting of ballet, the rise of criticism, and the life of ballet artists. The work of nineteenth-century Russia's principal ballet historians is also represented and the author's commentaries elucidate the documents' relevance and historical connections. The book will be an invaluable source for anyone interested in ballet or Russian culture.
