Thebaid Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHI JKLMANOPQ NRSTURVTUWRXOK

How many turn back toward dreams and magic how manyA
childrenB
Run home to Mother Church Father StateC
To find in their arms the delicious warmth and folding of soulsD
The age weakens and settles home toward old waysE
An age of renascent faith Christ said Marx wrote Hitler saysF
And though it seems absurd we believeG
Sad children yes It is lonely to be adult you need a fatherH
With a little practice you'll believe anythingI
-
Faith returns beautiful terrible ridiculousJ
And men are willing to die and kill for their faithK
Soon come the wars of religion centuries have passedL
Since the air so trembled with intense faith and hatredM
Soon perhaps whoever wants to live harmlesslyA
Must find a cave in the mountain or build a cellN
Of the red desert rock under dry junipersO
And avoid men live with more kindly wolvesP
And luckier ravens waiting for the end of the ageQ
-
Hermit from stone cellN
Gazing with great stunned eyesR
What extravagant miracleS
Has amazed them with lightT
What visions what crazy glory what wingsU
I see the sun set and riseR
And the beautiful desert sandV
And the stars at nightT
The incredible magnificence of thingsU
I the last living manW
That sees the real earth and skiesR
Actual life and real deathX
The others are all prophets and believersO
Delirious with fevers of faithK
