The Answer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFFGFHFIFJKFLMN

Then what is the answer Not to be deluded by dreamsA
To know that great civilizations have broken down into violenceB
and their tyrants come many times beforeC
When open violence appears to avoid it with honor or chooseD
the least ugly faction these evils are essentialE
To keep one's own integrity be merciful and uncorruptedF
and not wish for evil and not be dupedF
By dreams of universal justice or happiness These dreams willG
not be fulfilledF
To know this and know that however ugly the parts appearH
the whole remains beautiful A severed handF
Is an ugly thing and man dissevered from the earth and starsI
and his history for contemplation or in factF
Often appears atrociously ugly Integrity is wholenessJ
the greatest beauty isK
Organic wholeness the wholeness of life and things the divine beautyF
of the universe Love that not manL
Apart from that or else you will share man's pitiful confusionsM
or drown in despair when his days darkenN
