Subjected Earth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDCCEFGHH IJKLCCCCMDDNKCHCIOPQ RWalking in the flat Oxfordshire fields | A |
Where the eye can find no rock to rest on but little flints | B |
Speckle the soil and the million berried hedges | C |
Tingle with birds at evening I saw the sombre | D |
November day redden and go down a flight of lapwings | C |
Whirled in the hollow of the field and half tame pheasants | C |
Cried from the trees I remembered impatiently | E |
How the long bronze mountain of my own coast | F |
Where color is no account and pathos ridiculous the sculpture is all | G |
Breaks the arrows of the setting sun | H |
Over the enormous mounded eyeball of ocean | H |
- | |
The soft alien twilight | I |
Worn and weak with too much humanity hooded my mind | J |
Poor flourishing earth meek smiling slave | K |
If sometime the swamps return and the heavy forest black beech | L |
and oak roots | C |
Break up the paving of London streets | C |
And only as long before on the lifted ridgeways | C |
Few people shivering by little fires | C |
Watch the night of the forest cover the land | M |
And shiver to hear the wild dogs howling where the cities were | D |
Would you be glad to be free I think you will never | D |
Be glad again so kneaded with human flesh so humbled and changed | N |
Here all's down hill and passively goes to the grave | K |
Asks only a pinch of pleasure between the darknesses | C |
Contented to think that everything has been done | H |
That's in the scope of the race so should I also perhaps | C |
Dream under the empty angel of this twilight | I |
But the great memory of that unhumanized world | O |
With all its wave of good and evil to climb yet | P |
Its exorbitant power to match its heartless passion to equal | Q |
And all its music to make beats on the grave mound | R |
