Beyond the great valley an odd instinctive risingA
Begins to possess the ground the flatness gathersB
to little humps andC
barrows low aimless ridgesD
A sudden violence of rock crowns them The crowdedE
orchards end theyF
have come to a stone knifeG
The farms are finished the sudden foot of theH
slerra Hill over hillI
snow ridge beyond mountain gatherJ
The blue air of their height about themK
-
Here at the foot of the passL
The fierce clans of the mountain you'd think forM
thousands of yearsN
Men with harsh mouths and eyes like the eagles' hungerJ
Have gathered among these rocks at the dead hourJ
Of the morning star and the stars waningA
To raid the plain and at moonrise returning drivenO
Their scared booty to the highlands the tossing hornsP
And glazed eyes in the light of torches The men haveQ
looked backR
Standing above these rock heads to bark laughterJ
At the burning granaries and the farms and the townS
That sow the dark flat land with terrible rubiesT
lighting the deadU
It is not true from this landV
The curse was lifted the highlands have kept peaceW
with the valleys noX
blood in the sod there is no old swordY
Keeping grim rust no primal sorrow The people areZ
all one people theirA2
homes never knew harryingR
The tribes before them were acorn eaters harmlessB2
as deer Oh fortunateC2
earth you must find someoneO
To make you bitter music how else will you take bondsD2
of the futureJ
against the wolf in men's heartsE2
