Lady lovely ladyA
Careless and gayB
Once when a beggar calledC
She gave her child awayB

The beggar took the babyA
Wrapped it in a shawlD
Bring her back the lady saidE
Next time you callD
-
Hard by lived a vain manF
So vain and so proudG
He walked on stiltsH
To be seen by the crowdG
-
Up above the chimney potsI
Tall as a mastJ
And all the people ran aboutK
Shouting till he passedJ
-
A splendid match surelyA
Neighbours saw it plainL
Although she is so carelessM
Although he is so vainL
-
But the lady played bobcherryN
Did not see or careN
As the vain man went by herN
Aloft in the airN
-
This gentle born coupleO
Lived and died apartP
Water will not mix with oilQ
Nor vain with careless heartP
