The Leveller Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ

Near Martinpuisch that night of hellA
Two men were struck by the same shellA
Together tumbling in one heapB
Senseless and limp like slaughtered sheepB
-
One was a pale eighteen year oldC
Girlish and thin and not too boldC
Pressed for the war ten years too soonD
The shame and pity of his platoonD
-
The other came from far off landsE
With bristling chin and whiskered handsE
He had known death and hell beforeF
In Mexico and EcuadorF
-
Yet in his death this cut throat wildG
Groaned Mother Mother like a childG
While that poor innocent in man's clothesH
Died cursing God with brutal oathsH
-
Old Sergeant Smith kindest of menI
Wrote out two copies there and thenI
Of his accustomed funeral speechJ
To cheer the womenfolk of eachJ
