The General Elliott Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEBE FBGB BHIH BJKJ LMNM OBPB BBBB

He fell in victory's fierce pursuitA
Holed through and through with shotB
A sabre sweep had hacked him deepC
Twixt neck and shoulderknotB
-
The potman cannot well recallD
The ostler never knewE
Whether his day was MalplaquetB
The Boyne or WaterlooE
-
But there he hangs for tavern signF
With foolish bold regardB
For cock and hen and loitering menG
And wagons down the yardB
-
Raised high above the hayseed worldB
He smokes his painted pipeH
And now surveys the orchard waysI
The damsons clustering ripeH
-
He sees the churchyard slabs beyondB
Where country neighbours lieJ
Their brief renown set lowly downK
His name assaults the skyJ
-
He grips the tankard of brown aleL
That spills a generous foamM
Oft times he drinks they say and winksN
At drunk men lurching homeM
-
No upstart hero may usurpO
That honoured swinging seatB
His seasons pass with pipe and glassP
Until the tale's completeB
-
And paint shall keep his buttons brightB
Though all the world's forgotB
Whether he died for England's prideB
By battle or by potB
