The Little SaucepanA
-
Four collier lads from Ebbw ValeB
Took shelter from a shower of hailB
And there beneath a spreading treeC
Attuned their mouths to harmonyC
-
With smiling joy on every faceD
Two warbled tenor two sang bassE
And while the leaves above them hissed withF
Rough hail they started AberystwythF
-
Old Parry's hymn triumphant richG
They changed through with even pitchG
Till at the end of their grand noiseH
I called Give us the 'Sospan' boysH
-
Who knows a tune so soft so strongI
So pitiful as that Saucepan songI
For exiled hope despaired desireJ
Of lost souls for their cottage fireJ
-
Then low at first with gathering soundK
Rose their four voices smooth and roundK
Till back went Time once more I stoodL
With Fusiliers in Mametz WoodL
-
Fierce burned the sun yet cheeks were paleB
For ice hail they had leaden hailB
In that fine forest green and bigM
There stayed unbroken not one twigM
-
They sang they swore they plunged in hasteN
Stumbling and shouting through the wasteN
The little Saucepan flamed on highO
Emblem of hope and ease gone byO
-
Rough pit boys from the coaly SouthF
They sang even in the cannon's mouthF
Like Sunday's chapel Monday's innP
The death trap sounded with their dinP
-
-
-
The storm blows over Sun comes outQ
The choir breaks up with jest and shoutQ
With what relief I watch them partR
Another note would break my heartR
