August Officer previously reported died of wounds now reported wounded Graves Captain R Royal Welch FusiliersA

But I was dead an hour or moreB
I woke when I'd already passed the doorB
That Cerberus guards and half way down the roadC
To Lethe as an old Greek signpost showedC
Above me on my stretcher swinging byD
I saw new stars in the subterrene skyD
A Cross a Rose in bloom a Cage with barsA
And a barbed Arrow feathered in fine starsA
I felt the vapours of forgetfulnessA
Float in my nostrils Oh may Heaven blessA
Dear Lady Proserpine who saw me wakeE
And stooping over me for Henna's sakeE
Cleared my poor buzzing head and sent me backF
Breathless with leaping heart along the trackF
After me roared and clattered angry hostsA
Of demons heroes and policeman ghostsA
Life life I can't be dead I won't be deadG
Damned if I'll die for any one I saidG
Cerberus stands and grins above me nowH
Wearing three heads lion and lynx and sowH
Quick a revolver But my Webley's goneI
Stolen No bombs no knifeJ
The crowd swarms onK
Bellows hurls stones Not even a honeyed sopL
Nothing Good Cerberus Good dog but stopL
Stay A great luminous thought I do believeM
There's still some morphia that I bought on leaveM
Then swiftly Cerberus' wide mouths I cramN
With army biscuit smeared with ration jamN
-
And sleep lurks in the luscious plum and appleO
He crunches swallows stiffens seems to grappleO
With the all powerful poppy then a snoreB
A crash the beast blocks up the corridorP
With monstrous hairy carcase red and dunQ
Too late for I've sped throughR
O Life O SunQ
