As though His floods should quench His flames | G |

'Alas ' quoth He 'but newly born | H |
In fiery heats I fry | D |
Yet none approach to warm their hearts | I |
Or feel my fire but I | D |
'My faultless breast the furnace is | J |
The fuel wounding thorns | K |
Love is the fire and sighs the smoke | L |
The ashes shames and scorns | K |
The fuel Justice layeth on | M |
And Mercy blows the coals | N |
The metal in this furnace wrought | O |
Are men's defil egrave d souls | N |
For which as now on fire I am | P |
To work them to their good | Q |
So will I melt into a bath | R |
To wash them in my blood ' | S |
With this He vanish'd out of sight | A |
And swiftly shrunk away | T |
