LOVE mistress is of many mindsA
Yet few know whom they serveB
They reckon least how little LoveC
Their service doth deserveB
-
The will she robbeth from the witD
The sense from reason's loreE
She is delightful in the rindF
Corrupted in the coreE
-
She shroudeth vice in virtue's veilG
Pretending good in illH
She offereth joy affordeth griefI
A kiss where she doth killH
-
A honey shower rains from her lipsJ
Sweet lights shine in her faceK
She hath the blush of virgin mindF
The mind of viper's raceK
-
She makes thee seek yet fear to findF
To find but not enjoyL
In many frowns some gliding smilesM
She yields to more annoyL
-
She woos thee to come near her fireN
Yet doth she draw it from theeO
Far off she makes thy heart to fryP
And yet to freeze within theeO
-
She letteth fall some luring baitsQ
For fools to gather upR
Too sweet too sour to every tasteS
She tempereth her cupR
-
Soft souls she binds in tender twistT
Small flies in spinner's webU
She sets afloat some luring streamsV
But makes them soon to ebbU
-
Her watery eyes have burning forceW
Her floods and flames conspireN
Tears kindle sparks sobs fuel areX
And sighs do blow her fireN
-
May never was the month of loveC
For May is full of flowersY
But rather April wet by kindF
For love is full of showersY
-
Like tyrant cruel wounds she givesZ
Like surgeon salve she lendsA2
But salve and sore have equal forceW
For death is both their endsA2
-
With soothing words enthralled soulsB2
She chains in servile bandsC2
Her eye in silence hath a speechD2
Which eye best understandsC2
-
Her little sweet hath many soursY
Short hap immortal harmsE2
Her loving looks are murd'ring dartsF2
Her song bewitching charmsE2
-
Like winter rose and summer iceG2
Her joys are still untimelyO
Before her Hope behind RemorseW
Fair first in fine unseemlyO
-
Moods passions fancy's jealous fitsH2
Attend upon her trainI2
She yieldeth rest without reposeJ2
And heaven in hellish painI2
-
Her house is Sloth her door DeceitK2
And slippery Hope her stairsL2
Unbashful Boldness bids her guestsM2
And every vice repairsL2
-
Her diet is of such delightsN2
As please till they be pastO2
But then the poison kills the heartP2
That did entice the tasteS
-
Her sleep in sin doth end in wrathQ2
Remorse rings her awakeR2
Death calls her up Shame drives her outS2
Despairs her upshot makeR2
-
Plough not the seas sow not the sandsC2
Leave off your idle painI2
Seek other mistress for your mindsA
Love's service is in vainI2
