Noel: Christmas Eve 1913 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEEAFGHIJKALMNOA OPPOOAQRSOHT UAAQEAEVQCQO

en the stars were shiningA
Fared I forth aloneB
where westward falls the hillC
And from many a villageD
in the water'd valleyE
Distant music reach'd meE
peals of bells aringingA
The constellated soundsF
ran sprinkling on earth's floorG
As the dark vault aboveH
with stars was spangled o'erI
Then sped my thoughts to keepJ
that first Christmas of allK
When the shepherds watchingA
by their folds ere the dawnL
Heard music in the fieldsM
and marveling could not tellN
Whether it were angelsO
or the bright stars singingA
-
Now blessed be the tow'rsO
that crown England so fairP
That stand up strong in prayerP
unto God for our soulsO
Blessed be their foundersO
said I an' our country folkA
Who are ringing for ChristQ
in the belfries to nightR
With arms lifted to clutchS
the rattling ropes that raceO
Into the dark aboveH
and the mad romping dinT
-
But to me heard afarU
it was starry musicA
Angels' song comfortingA
as the comfort of ChristQ
When he spake tenderlyE
to his sorrowful flockA
The old words came to meE
by the riches of timeV
Mellow'd and transfiguredQ
as I stood on the hillC
Heark'ning in the aspectQ
of th' eternal silenceO
