Low Barometer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN OPQP

The south wind strengthens to a galeA
Across the moon the clouds fly fastB
The house is smitten as with a flailA
The chimney shudders to the blastB
-
On such a night when Air has loosedC
Its guardian grasp on blood and brainD
Old terrors then of god or ghostE
Creep from their caves to life againF
-
And Reason kens he herits inG
A haunted house Tenants unknownH
Assert their squalid lease of sinG
With earlier title than his ownH
-
Unbodied presences the packedI
Pollution and remorse of TimeJ
Slipped from oblivion re enactI
The horrors of unhousehold crimeJ
-
Some men would quell the thing with prayerK
Whose sightless footsteps pad the floorL
Whose fearful trespass mounts the stairK
Or burst the locked forbidden doorL
-
Some have seen corpses long interredM
Escape from hallowing controlN
Pale charnel forms nay even have heardM
The shrilling of a troubled soulN
-
That wanders till the dawn has crossedO
The dolorous dark or Earth has woundP
Closer her storm spread cloak and thrustQ
The baleful phantoms undergroundP
