I never shall love the snow againA
Since Maurice diedB
With corniced drift it blocked the laneC
And sheeted in a desolate plainC
The country sideB
-
The trees with silvery rime bedightB
Their branches bareD
By day no sun appeared by nightB
The hidden moon shed thievish lightB
In the misty airD
-
We fed the birds that flew aroundB
In flocks to be fedB
No shelter in holly or brake they foundB
The speckled thrush on the frozen groundB
Lay frozen and deadB
-
-
We skated on stream and pond we cutB
The crinching snowE
To Doric temple or Arctic hutB
We laughed and sang at nightfall shutB
By the fireside glowE
-
Yet grudged we our keen delights beforeF
Maurice should comeG
We said 'In door or out of doorF
We shall love life for a month or moreF
When he is home '-
-
They brought him home 'twas two days lateB
For Christmas DayB
Wrapped in white in solemn stateB
A flower in his hand all still and straightB
Our Maurice layB
-
And two days ere the year outgaveH
We laid him lowE
The best of us truly were not braveH
When we laid Maurice down in his graveH
Under the snowE
