The opening scene The yellow coal fed fogA
Uncurling over the tainted city riverB
A young girl rowing and her anxious fatherB
Scavenging for corpses Funeral meats The cleverB
Abandoned orphan The great athletic killerB
Sulking in his tent As though all stories beganC
With someone dyingD
-
When her mother diedE
My mother refused to attend the funeralF
In fact she sulked in her tent all through the yearG
Of the old lady's dying I don't know whyH
She said because she loved her mother so muchI
She couldn't bear to see the way the doctorsJ
Or her father or someone was letting her mother dieH
Follow your saint follow with accents sweetK
Haste you sad notes fall at her flying feetK
-
She fogs things up she scavenges the taintL
Possibly that's the reason I write these poemsM
-
But they did speak on the phone Wept and arguedN
So fiercely one or the other often cut offO
A sentence by hanging up in rage like loversJ
But all that year she never saw her faceP
-
They lived on the same block four doors apartQ
Absence my presence is strangeness my graceP
With them that walk against me is my sunR
-
Synagogue is a word I never heardS
We called it shul the Yiddish word for schoolT
Elms terra cotta the ocean a few blocks eastU
Lay institution she taught me we didn't thinkV
God lived in it The rabbi is just a teacherB
-
But what about the hereditary priestsW
Descendants of the Cohanes of the TempleF
Like Walter Holtz I called him Uncle WalterB
When I was small A big man with a faceP
Just like a boxer dog or a cartoon sergeantX
She told me whenever he helped a pretty womanR
Try on a shoe in his store he'd touch her calfY
And ask her How does that feel I was too littleF
To get the point but pretended to understandZ
Desire be steady hope is your delightA2
An orb wherein no creature can ever be sorryB2
-
She didn't go to my bar mitzvah eitherB
I can't say why she was there and then she wasn'tX
I looked around before I mounted the stepsC2
To chant that babble and the speech the rabbi wroteD2
And there she wasn't and there was Uncle WalterB
The Cohane frowning with his doggy faceP
She's missing her own son's musaf Maybe she justE2
Doesn't like rituals Afterwards she had a reasonR
I don't remember I wasn't upset the truthF2
Is I had decided to be the clever orphanR
Some time before By now it's all a mythG2
What is a myth but something that seems to happenR
Always for the first time over and over againH2
And ten years later she missed my brother's tooI2
I'm sorry I think it was something about a hatJ2
Hot sun cool fire tempered with sweet airK2
Black shade fair nurse shadow my white hairK2
Shine sun burn fire breathe air and ease meB2
-
She sees the minister of the Nation of IslamL2
On television though she's half blind in one eyeH
His bow tie is lime his jacket crocodile greenM2
Vigorously he denounces the Jews who traded in slavesN2
The Jews who run the newspapers and the banksO2
I see what this guy is mad about now she saysP2
It must have been some Jew that sold him the suitQ2
And the same wind sang and the same wave whitenedQ2
And or ever the garden's last petals were shedQ2
In the lips that had whispered the eyes that had lightenedQ2
-
But when they unveiled her mother's memorial stoneR2
Gathered at the graveside one year after the deathS2
According to custom while we were standing aroundQ2
About to begin the prayers her car appearedQ2
It was a black car the ground was deep in snowT2
My mother got out and walked toward us acrossU2
The field of gravestones capped with snow her coatQ2
Black as the car and they waited to start the prayersV2
Until she arrived I think she enjoyed the dramaW2
I can't remember if she prayed or notQ2
But that may be the way I'll remember her bestQ2
Dark figure awaited attended aware apartQ2
The present time upon time pass euml d strikethS2
With Phoebus's wandering course the earth is gracedQ2
-
The air still moves and by its moving clearethS2
The fire up ascends and planets feedethS2
The water passeth on and all lets wearethS2
The earth stands still yet change of changes breedethS2
