The opening scene The yellow coal fed fog	A
Uncurling over the tainted city river	B
A young girl rowing and her anxious father	B
Scavenging for corpses Funeral meats The clever	B
Abandoned orphan The great athletic killer	B
Sulking in his tent As though all stories began	C
With someone dying	D

When her mother died	E
My mother refused to attend the funeral	F
In fact she sulked in her tent all through the year	G
Of the old lady's dying I don't know why	H
She said because she loved her mother so much	I
She couldn't bear to see the way the doctors	J
Or her father or someone was letting her mother die	H
Follow your saint follow with accents sweet	K
Haste you sad notes fall at her flying feet	K

She fogs things up she scavenges the taint	L
Possibly that's the reason I write these poems	M
	-
But they did speak on the phone Wept and argued	N
So fiercely one or the other often cut off	O
A sentence by hanging up in rage like lovers	J
But all that year she never saw her face	P

They lived on the same block four doors apart	Q
Absence my presence is strangeness my grace	P
With them that walk against me is my sun	R

Synagogue is a word I never heard	S
We called it shul the Yiddish word for school	T
Elms terra cotta the ocean a few blocks east	U
Lay institution she taught me we didn't think	V
God lived in it The rabbi is just a teacher	B

But what about the hereditary priests	W
Descendants of the Cohanes of the Temple	F
Like Walter Holtz I called him Uncle Walter	B
When I was small A big man with a face	P
Just like a boxer dog or a cartoon sergeant	X
She told me whenever he helped a pretty woman	R
Try on a shoe in his store he'd touch her calf	Y
And ask her How does that feel I was too little	F
To get the point but pretended to understand	Z
Desire be steady hope is your delight	A2
An orb wherein no creature can ever be sorry	B2

She didn't go to my bar mitzvah either	B
I can't say why she was there and then she wasn't	X
I looked around before I mounted the steps	C2
To chant that babble and the speech the rabbi wrote	D2
And there she wasn't and there was Uncle Walter	B
The Cohane frowning with his doggy face	P
She's missing her own son's musaf Maybe she just	E2
Doesn't like rituals Afterwards she had a reason	R
I don't remember I wasn't upset the truth	F2
Is I had decided to be the clever orphan	R
Some time before By now it's all a myth	G2
What is a myth but something that seems to happen	R
Always for the first time over and over again	H2
And ten years later she missed my brother's too	I2
I'm sorry I think it was something about a hat	J2
Hot sun cool fire tempered with sweet air	K2
Black shade fair nurse shadow my white hair	K2
Shine sun burn fire breathe air and ease me	B2

She sees the minister of the Nation of Islam	L2
On television though she's half blind in one eye	H
His bow tie is lime his jacket crocodile green	M2
Vigorously he denounces the Jews who traded in slaves	N2
The Jews who run the newspapers and the banks	O2
I see what this guy is mad about now she says	P2
It must have been some Jew that sold him the suit	Q2
And the same wind sang and the same wave whitened	Q2
And or ever the garden's last petals were shed	Q2
In the lips that had whispered the eyes that had lightened	Q2

But when they unveiled her mother's memorial stone	R2
Gathered at the graveside one year after the death	S2
According to custom while we were standing around	Q2
About to begin the prayers her car appeared	Q2
It was a black car the ground was deep in snow	T2
My mother got out and walked toward us across	U2
The field of gravestones capped with snow her coat	Q2
Black as the car and they waited to start the prayers	V2
Until she arrived I think she enjoyed the drama	W2
I can't remember if she prayed or not	Q2
But that may be the way I'll remember her best	Q2
Dark figure awaited attended aware apart	Q2
The present time upon time pass euml d striketh	S2
With Phoebus's wandering course the earth is graced	Q2

The air still moves and by its moving cleareth	S2
The fire up ascends and planets feedeth	S2
The water passeth on and all lets weareth	S2
The earth stands still yet change of changes breedeth	S2
