Love at the lips was touchA
As sweet as I could bearB
And once that seemed too muchA
I lived on airB
-
That crossed me from sweet thingsC
The flow of was it muskD
From hidden grapevine springsC
Downhill at duskD
-
I had the swirl and acheE
From sprays of honeysuckleF
That when they're gathered shakeE
Dew on the knuckleF
-
I craved strong sweets but thoseG
Seemed strong when I was youngH
The petal of the roseG
It was that stungH
-
Now no joy but lacks saltI
That is not dashed with painJ
And weariness and faultI
I crave the stainJ
-
Of tears the aftermarkH
Of almost too much loveK
The sweet of bitter barkH
And burning cloveK
-
When stiff and sore and scarredL
I take away my handM
From leaning on it hardL
In grass and sandM
-
The hurt is not enoughK
I long for weight and strengthN
To feel the earth as roughK
To all my lengthN
