A lantern light from deeper in the barnA
Shone on a man and woman in the doorB
And threw their lurching shadows on a houseC
Near by all dark in every glossy windowD
A horse's hoof pawed once the hollow floorB
And the back of the gig they stood besideE
Moved in a little The man grasped a wheelF
The woman spoke out sharply Whoa stand stillG
I saw it just as plain as a white plateH
She said as the light on the dashboard ranI
Along the bushes at the roadside a man's faceJ
You must have seen it tooK
I didn't see itL
Are you sureM
Yes I'm sureM
it was a faceJ
Joel I'll have to look I can't go inN
I can't and leave a thing like that unsettledO
Doors locked and curtains drawn will make no differenceP
I always have felt strange when we came homeQ
To the dark house after so long an absenceP
And the key rattled loudly into placeJ
Seemed to warn someone to be getting outR
At one door as we entered at anotherS
What if I'm right and someone all the timeT
Don't hold my armU
I say it's someone passingV
You speak as if this were a travelled roadW
You forget where we are What is beyondX
That he'd be going to or coming fromY
At such an hour of night and on foot tooK
What was he standing still for in the bushesZ
It's not so very late it's only darkA2
There's more in it than you're inclined to sayB2
Did he look likeC2
He looked like anyoneD2
I'll never rest to night unless I knowD
Give me the lanternE2
You don't want the lanternE2
She pushed past him and got it for herselfF2
You're not to come she said This is my businessG2
If the time's come to face it I'm the oneD2
To put it the right way He'd never dareH2
Listen He kicked a stone Hear that hear thatI2
He's coming towards us Joel go in pleaseJ2
Hark I don't hear him now But please go inN
In the first place you can't make me believe it'sK2
It is or someone else he's sent to watchL2
And now's the time to have it out with himM2
While we know definitely where he isN2
Let him get off and he'll be everywhereH2
Around us looking out of trees and bushesZ
Till I sha'n't dare to set a foot outdoorsO2
And I can't stand it Joel let me goD
But it's nonsense to think he'd care enoughP2
You mean you couldn't understand his caringV
Oh but you see he hadn't had enoughP2
Joel I won't I won't I promise youK
We mustn't say hard things You mustn't eitherS
I'll be the one if anybody goesQ2
But you give him the advantage with this lightR2
What couldn't he do to us standing hereS2
And if to see was what he wanted whyT2
He has seen all there was to see and goneU2
He appeared to forget to keep his holdV2
But advanced with her as she crossed the grassW2
What do you want she cried to all the darkA2
She stretched up tall to overlook the lightR2
That hung in both hands hot against her skirtX2
There's no one so you're wrong he saidY2
There isN2
What do you want she cried and then herselfF2
Was startled when an answer really cameZ2
Nothing It came from well along the roadW
She reached a hand to Joel for supportA3
The smell of scorching woollen made her faintB3
What are you doing round this house at nightR2
Nothing A pause there seemed no more to sayB2
And then the voice again You seem afraidC3
I saw by the way you whipped up the horseD3
I'll just come forward in the lantern lightR2
And let you seeE3
Yes do Joel go backF3
She stood her ground against the noisy stepsG3
That came on but her body rocked a littleH3
You see the voice saidY2
Oh She looked and lookedI3
You don't see I've a child here by the handJ3
What's a child doing at this time of nightR2
Out walking Every child should have the memoryE3
Of at least one long after bedtime walkK3
What sonD2
Then I should think you'd try to findL3
Somewhere to walkK3
The highway as it happensM3
We're stopping for the fortnight down at Dean'sN3
But if that's all Joel you realizeO3
You won't think anything You understandJ3
You understand that we have to be carefulH3
This is a very very lonely placeJ
Joel She spoke as if she couldn't turnE2
The swinging lantern lengthened to the groundP3
It touched it struck it clattered and went outR
