Two fairies it wasA
On a still summer dayB
Came forth in the woodsC
With the flowers to playB
The flowers they pluckedD
They cast on the groundE
For others and thoseF
For still others they foundE
Flower guided it wasA
That they came as they ranG
On something that layB
In the shape of a manG
The snow must have madeH
The feathery bedI
When this one fellJ
On the sleep of the deadI
But the snow was goneK
A long time agoL
And the body he woreM
Nigh gone with the snowL
The fairies drew nearN
And keenly espiedI
A ring on his handI
And a chain at his sideI
They knelt in the leavesO
And eerily playedI
With the glittering thingsP
And were not afraidI
And when they went homeQ
To hide in their burrowL
They took them alongR
To play with to morrowL
When you came on deathS
Did you not come flower guidedI
Like the elves in the woodI
I remember that I didI
But I recognized deathS
With sorrow and dreadI
And I hated and hateI
The spoils of the deadI
