It is early morning within this room withoutA
Dark and damp without and within stillnessB
Waiting for day not a sound but a listening airC
-
Yellow jasmine delicate on stiff branchesD
Stands in a Tuscan pot to delight the eyeE
In spare December's patient nakednessD
-
Suddenly softly as if at a breath breathedF
On the pale wall a magical apparitionG
The shadow of the jasmine branch and blossomH
-
It was not there it is there in a perfect imageI
And all is changed It is like a memory lostJ
Returning without a reason into the mindK
-
And it seems to me that the beauty of the shadowL
Is more beautiful than the flower a strange beautyM
Pencilled and silently deepening to distinctnessD
-
As a memory stealing out of the mind's slumberN
A memory floating up from a dark waterN
Can be more beautiful than the thing rememberedO
-
I turn to the window and out of a low cloudP
Is a brimming over of brightness dazzling the eyeE
With levelled brilliance fiery fresh the SunG
-
As in absent thought with dreaming eyes I gazeD
On sudden shadows gliding across the rimeH
A vision comes before me in utter silenceD
-
The earth is moving the earth is rolling overN
All that is usual all that goes unquestionedQ
is taken from meH
wider wider the doors of vision are openingR
-
Horizon opening into unguessed horizonsD
And I with the earth am moving into the lightS
The earth is moving the earth is rolling overN
into the light long longT
shadows of trees run outA
are running across the grassD
-
With frosty plains mountains and curving coastsD
Cities and rivers forests burning desertsD
Seas and the sprinkled islands passing passingR
But all transparent Under the generous earthU
The careless waters I see the original firesD
Leaping in spasms seeking to burst their prisonG
And I remember that human eyes have seenV
Solid earth yawn and cities shaken to fragmentsD
Ocean torn to the bottom and great ships swallowedW
-
Now more terrible than those blind convulsionsD
Are men at war on land on the seas in the airC
War war in the brain in the obstinate willX
war in the brain war in the will warY
No refuge or hiding place anywhere for the mindK
And now I hear everywhere sound of battleZ
The seekers after destruction there is no refugeA2
Death death death on the earth in the sea in the airC
Yet oh it is a single soul always in the midstB2
Each is a single soulC2
O it cannot be yet it isD
-
Let me not be so stunned that I cannot feelD2
Imagination is but a little cupE2
It can hold but a minim partF2
Can a little cup contain an oceanG
-
My dreaming eyes returnG2
The flower of winter remembers its own seasonG
And the beautiful shadow upon the pale wallH2
Is imperceptibly moving with ancient earthU
Around the sun that timeless measures sure and silentI2
