Emerging from deep sleep my eyes unsealA
To a pursuing strangeness O to beB
Where but a moment past I was though whereC
The place the time I know not only feelA
Far from this banished and so shrunken meB
Struck conscious to the alien dawn's blank peerD
-
Between two worlds homeless I doubt of bothE
Knowing only that I seemed possessing realmsF
And now have nothing In this glimmering caveG
Of daylight whither I return so loathE
The emptiness of silence overwhelmsF
Still vision haunted like the blind I craveG
-
For splendour beats along my blood in gleamsH
As of a skyey largeness closed and lostI
That memory torments itself to clutchJ
Hungering unsated for that light of dreamsH
Pursued down shadowy paths that foil exhaustI
And lose me in a cloud I cannot touchJ
-
Fixed as in frost the motionless dim shapeK
Of each accustomed thing about my bedL
Is like an enmity at watch for staleM
Habit to repossess me past escapeK
In the dead light all seems apart and deadL
Yet menaces The ticked hour is my jailM
-
Yet I had sense as of a forge whose blastN
Could fuse this stark world into glorious flowO
Of young power streaming irresistibleP
And I dilated roamed a region vastN
Feasting in vision with a soul aglowO
And Time a steed to pace or race at willQ
-
Where is that world that I am fallen fromR
Look as a sea weed left at ebb to pineS
Hueless and shrunken that had libertyB
To wander sparkle fresh in its own foamT
Trailing its rosy hair in the long brineS
So am I cast up from what haunted seaB
-
An ocean of the mind without accessU
Save in the labyrinths of sleep a mainV
Deep with the memory of all memoriesW
Thoughts and imaginations numberlessW
That ever lodged in the brief living brainV
Washing our sun lit ignorance was it thisW
-
Then miserable I that have but suckedX
Dull oozings vanished into vaporous dewY
From springs that custom closes like a stoneZ
And leaden fear and clayey doubt obstructX
Heir of the earth's youth and of all it knewY
What am I but a vessel charged with oblivionA2
-
Ah surely I was rather native thereC
Where all desires were lovely and the powerB2
Of Time irrevocably creeping sureC2
Was uncreated than in this numb airC
Of mapped days and of hour pursuing hourB2
Endless impediment and forfeitureB2
-
O we go shrouded from ourselves and hideD2
The soul from its own splendour and encrustE2
The virgin sense with thinking Then some chanceW
Moment reveals us we are deifiedD2
Feeling and seeing gold gleams from the rustE2
And marvelling at our lost inheritanceW
-
We breathe the air of beauty we regaleQ
The mind with innocence joy has no stintF2
And we are chartered for the world's wide seaW
Reason the rudder not the sky filled sailQ
Still clings about us some imputing hintF2
Of strangeness even in self captivityW
-
Before me comes a vision of the oldG2
With dear experience sunken in their eyesW
And furrowed on their faces scarce a sparkH2
Betrays the quick fire that once made them boldG2
All their strength's only for that enterpriseW
Which takes them soon into the engulfing darkH2
-
I think of old ships stranded how they stirB2
The mind to see their beauty in its decayI2
For they unmemoried and mute have beenJ2
Companions of the wild winds without fearD
And carried far adventure who shall sayI2
Into what glories we have never seenK2
