Now danced are all the dancesA
And all the games are doneB
The merry noise the laughterC
Feasting and lights and funB
The gifts unwrapt and givenB
The forfeits paid and wonB
-
Now firelight pranks the ceilingD
Above each sleepy headE
It warms a hand that's claspingD
The new toy hugged in bedE
On hair it flickers goldenB
And cheeks of rosier redE
-
But one who wakes from dreamingD
For something stirs her mindF
As if in dream persistingD
Some fairy land to findF
Steals tip toe in her night gownG
And peeps beyond the blindF
-
Lo stars in frosty stillnessH
That hush the heart so brightI
They sparkle among the branchesA
Of the old oak in the nightI
Ten thousand stars and one starJ
Exceeding all in lightI
-
Her heart beats in the darknessH
What if beyond somewhereK
The shepherds now are shufflingD
Across the common bareK
The path she knows by pond and hedgeL
The wonder sight to shareK
-
And the Wise Men are they comingD
With long beards furred and stoledI
The jewelled East behind themM
Laden with spice and goldI
She sees them clear she sees themM
How wise and oh how oldI
-
To night the wise are simpleN
And the old forget to scornO
The young heart and the foolishP
The sad are not forlornO
Hope holds the world in wonderC
Because a Child is bornO
