All the night the voices of ocean around my sleepA
Their murmuring undulation sleepless keptB
Rocked in a dream I sleptB
Till drawn from trances deepA
At the invocation of morning calling strongC
I felt through sanguine eyelids light suffuseD
My brain and woke to a wonder of glad huesD
And over the trembling choir of birds that throngC
Among the tamarisk and the glittering dewsD
I heard O sea thy songC
-
A charm has lured my feet and I to the beach come downE
The bright abandoned beach the curving strandF
And stripping upon the sandF
I meet the salt spray o'er my body blownG
Embracing swift the jubilant waves that sendH
Their triumphing surges shouting to the shores aroundI
Until in a rushing splendour senses drownedI
The solid earth forgetting haste to spendH
Their ever fresh delight in the glory of swift soundI
And the thunder without endH
-
But now from the wave withdrawn in indolent easeJ
Again desire upsprings to know thy heartK
I pace by the foam apartK
Or linger in shadow shy removed from any breezeJ
Come thou hast more to tell thou hast not doneL
I will be patient all day lying in wait to hearM
Upon the warm rock ledges hearkening nearN
Of all thy thousand tones to lose not oneL
While the shattered surf blows o'er me leaping clearN
To the seaward journeying sunL
-
Radiant hurrying delight of crests that dance and advanceO
Careless arrogant legions tossing their milky manesP
How the wet light leaps and rainsP
From shivered plumes that melt in a lightning glanceO
And splendour of airy tresses backward blownG
What shouts of exultation laughter sweetQ
Wail of vanishing hosts and sighs of defeatQ
Irresistible menace and anguished moanG
A thousand voices mingle in triumph and retreatQ
But tell me O sea thine ownG
-
Surely to happy mirth thou wooest my desireR
Willing is my heart with thy young waves to roamS
Lightly tripping foamS
Ever laughing nearer ever dancing higherR
Sweeter than all glory where the spirit willsT
With heart outpoured in song triumphant as the tideU
With eager open heart ever to ride and rideU
Yet now at height of joy what tumult fillsT
Thy rushing strength A sudden gloom invades thy prideU
Resisted an anger thrillsT
-
Mutinous indignation that heavy Fate defiesV
The ignorant rocks that set their sullen jawsW
In thy white flames that never pauseW
Rebelliously upleaping my own heart I recogniseW
I see the world's embattled towers uplift their heightX
The wise distrusting faces of them that trample truthY
I see the bodies slain of hopeless hoping youthY
And dark my heart upswells to the vainly echoing fightX
Cries of the helpless tears of idle ruthY
And the wrong I cannot rightX
-
Melancholy to thee must I my vows resignZ
The bitterness of my spirit give awayA2
To the bitter broken sprayA2
O down drawn sighing streams with you repineZ
Cover me heavy waters that I may hide my faceW
In darkness nor behold the ruined flowers I sowedB2
Desolately forsaken that so sweetly glowedC2
Defeated too am I and languish in my placeW
And still as glory fades I bear a heavier loadC2
And the desert spreads apaceW
-
Figures of sorrow now in my remembrance standF
I see the face of her that her children ask for breadD2
She turns away her headD2
The face of him that all day toils on a stony landF
Women that ere the morning to their woe awakeE2
And him that sightless hears the murmur gaily streamsW
Knocking weary the pavement that opens not for himF2
O loud bewailing waves you tremble as you breakE2
And you lift your dirges wild as you vanish into dreamG2
For these and for my sakeE2
-
But hark what voice emerges from the lamenting choirR
Surely Love is speaking My heart trembles to hearM
Now no more I fearN
I cast my grief behind I have but one desireR
To give my soul entire nor to count any costH2
To pour my heart in passionate unreason sweetQ
To follow and to follow with ever faithful feetQ
The steps adored of Love whatever peril crossedI2
With bliss or woe extreme my longing to completeQ
In love divinely lostI2
-
Sea was this thy errand Ah but hushJ2
Again the wild lament again the strifeK2
And now in mirth of lifeK2
Thy gleeful waters all overriding rushJ2
O have I heard at last For now thy voices callL2
Mingled and sounding clear in a mighty voice as oneZ
In my heart they mingle that rejecteth noneZ
Sorrow that no longer shall my head appalL2
Love my sweetest joy pain that I fear to shunZ
I need I need them allL2
