Heroes whose days are toldA
Above whose bodies braveB
Presses the heavy coldA
And quenching waveB
-
Ye sleep but your bright fameC
Blown upon every breezeD
Touches with mournful flameC
The Syrian seasD
-
Now all your English landE
Trembles with tears with prideF
Stretching toward you her handE
O glorifiedF
-
There he that walks aloneG
A vision goes with himH
In still field or thronged townI
A solemn dreamJ
-
He sees the placid blueK
Mediterranean shineL
The warships two and twoK
In ordered lineL
-
He sees those consorts vastM
On their doomed circle comeN
With held breath and aghastM
The Fleet is dumbN
-
For him the moments hangO
His ears the shock awaitP
On him too a strong pangO
Fastens like fateP
-
Transfixt his eyes see thenQ
The decks heave lined with freeR
Firm ranks weaponless menQ
Matched with the SeaR
-
Alas the wound is deepS
Not even spirits so braveB
Their vainly splendid shipT
Keep from the waveB
-
On their last farewell criesU
Shines the permitting sunV
With his men Tryon liesU
And all is doneV
-
Yet through some hearts the prayerW
Thrills O that I had diedF
Fallen in glory thereW
By comrades' sideF
