As a swallow that sits on the roofA
I gaze on the world aloofA
-
In the silence when men lie sleepingB
I hear the noise of weepingB
-
The tears by Day deridedC
To tender Night confidedD
-
Ah now I listen I cannot delayE
In thoughts apart I must not stayE
-
The doors are closed and fast unseenF
With stealthy feet I glide betweenF
-
I see the sleepers asleep in their bedsG
Negligent arms motionless headsG
-
Beautiful in the bloom of slumberH
Peaceful armies without numberH
-
Not here I linger the sigh of thoseI
That sleep not draws me with answered throesI
-
A mother mapping her day of caresJ
On her sleeping baby softly staresJ
-
A youth by shameful sorrow tornK
Thinks on the unendurable mornK
-
By her husband a wife unhappy liesL
With bitter heart and open eyesL
-
An old man hears the voice of the waveM
His dear son's cold unquiet graveM
-
Alone in the lonely listening nightN
A child lies still in dumb affrightN
-
The burden of all dark things unknownO
Weighs on his trembling heart like stoneO
-
A man remembers his dead love's smileP
And his tranquil courage is quelled awhileP
-
My heart is heavy with love and painQ
The tears within me oppress my brainQ
-
What shall I tell you you that acheR
And number the laggard hours awakeR
-
O stabbed and stricken what soothing artN
Shall I use to assuage the wounds that smartN
-
The consolation that ere I knowS
Love and sorrow I fancied trueT
-
Is faint and helpless now I findN
As beauty told in the ears of the blindN
-
And I cannot utter in words the thoughtN
That strengthens me most when my heart is wroughtN
-
O brother that cannot the days undoT
Could I but the reckoning pay for youT
-
O mother sink your head in peaceU
And I will your knot of care releaseU
-
Dear child give me your dread to bearV
I hold your hand I stroke your hairV
-
It is I who love you that watch and keepW
Darkness from you the while you sleepW
-
I have no counsel I know not whyX
In your breasts the arrows burning lieX
-
I cannot heal your hurts nor takeR
The sharp iron out of souls that acheR
-
O yet as I watch the lashes closeY
A little the eyes their lids disposeI
-
The hand that fondly lies in mineZ
Relaxes the wearied heads declineZ
-
And now on wings the sorrows fleeA2
From the happy sleepers hither to meA2
-
O noiseless sorrows darkly throngingR
My heart is prepared my tender longingR
-
You alone can appease with tearsJ
With pangs with passion with shame with fearsB2
-
Feed on my heart that is open and bareV
Feed your fill sorrow and careV
-
Take me pains of all souls forlornK
For O too swiftly arrives the mornK
