IA
I lay upon my bed in the great nightB
The sense of my body drowsedB
But a clearness yet lingered in the spiritB
By soft obscurity housedB
-
As an inn to a traveller on a long roadB
Happy sleep appearedB
I should come there to the room of waiting dreamsC
In the time that slowly nearedB
-
But still amid memory's wane fancy delightedB
Like wings in the afterglowD
Dipping to the freshness of the waves of livingE
To recover from long agoD
-
A touch or a voice then soaring aloft and afarF
The free world to rangeG
At last on the brink of the dark by subtle degreesH
Came a chilling and a changeG
-
Solitude sank to my marrow and pierced my veinsI
Though I roam and though I learnJ
All the wonder of earth and of men it is hereK
In the end I must returnJ
-
To the something alone that in each of us breathes and sleepsL
Profound isolate stillM
And must brave the giant world and from hour to hourN
Must prove its own willM
-
To this self unexcused and unglorified drawnO
From its fond shadows and bareP
Wherein no man that has been none that is or shall beQ
Shares or can ever shareP
-
And it tingled through me how all use and disguiseR
Hide nothing noneS
Avails to shield neither pleader nor protectorN
But the truth of myself aloneT
-
And the days that have made me have I not made them alsoD
Are they not drops of my bloodB
What have I done with them Flower they still within meQ
Or lie trodden in the mudB
-
Why for god like freedom an irreplaceable HereK
An irrevocable NowU
They were heavy like strong chains about my bosomV
Like hard bonds upon my browU
-
The moments oozing out of the silence seemedB
From my very heart lostB
In the stream of the worlds I felt them hot like tearsW
And of more than riches' costB
-
Yet what was it alien in me stood and rebelledB
And cried NeverthelessX
My passion is mine my strength and my frailty I am notB
Thrall unto Time's duressX
-
Then suddenly rose before me older than allY
Night of the soft speechZ
With murmur of tender winds yet terrible with starsA2
Beyond fancy's reachZ
-
Without foundation without summit withoutB
Haven or refuge NightB
Palpitating with stars that dizzy thought and desireN
In their unimagined flightB
-
O these most terrible vast surmises touchingE
The pulse of a fear unknownT
Where all experience breaks like a frail bubbleB2
And the soul is left aloneT
-
Alone and abandoned of all familiar usesC2
Itself the only placeD2
It knows a question winged barbed and burningE
In the answerless frost of SpaceD2
-
I was afraid but my heart throbbed faster fiercerN
I trembled but cried anewE2
I am strange to you O Stars O Night I am your exileF2
I have no portion in youE2
-
Though you shall array your silences against meQ
I know you and defyA
Though I be but a moth in an abyss of agesC2
This at least is not yours it is IA
-
-
IIA
O bless d be the touch of thoughtB
That marries moments from afarF
That finds the thing it had not soughtB
And smells a spice no treasure boughtB
And learns what never sages taughtB
And sees this earth a dazzling starF
-
As in the sheen of a lamp unseenG2
The lamp of memory shrouded longH2
There sprang before me sweet as songH2
The vision of a branch of bloomI2
A swaying branch of blossom scentedB
And in that bloom amid the gloomI2
My heart was luminously tentedB
-
-
IIIA
A score of years was melted and I was youngJ2
And the world young with meQ
When in innocence of delight I laid me downK2
Beneath a certain treeQ
-
The breathing splendour of that remembered MayL2
Had yet seven days to spillM
In fragrant showers of fairy white and redB
And in notes from the blackbird's billM
-
When I laid me down on a bank by the water's edgeM2
In the glowing shadow I layL2
My very body was drenched in a speechless joyN2
Whose cause I could not sayL2
-
The sky was poured in singing rivers of blueE2
The ripple danced in sightB
Close to the marge was a coloured pebble it burnedB
Amid kisses of liquid lightB
-
Like a hurry of little flames the tremble of gleamsC
Shivered up through the leaves and was goneO
Like a shaking of heavenly bells was the sound of the leavesO2
In the tower of branches blownT
-
And odours wandering each from its honeyed hauntB
Over the air stoleP2
Like memories out of a world before the worldB
Seeking the private soulP2
-
But I knew not where my soul was in that hourN
Neither time nor place it knewE2
It was trembling high in the topmost blossom that drankQ2
Of the glory of airy blueE2
-
It was dark in the root that sucked of the plenteous earthR2
It was lovely flames of fireN
It was water that murmured round and around the worldB
It was poured in the sun's desireN
-
Not the bird but the bird's bright wayward swiftnessS2
Not the flowers in magic throngH2
But the shooting the breathing and the perfumed breakingE
Not the singer it was but the songH2
-
I touched the flesh of my body and it was strangeG
It seemed that my spirit knewE2
It was I no more yet the earth and the sky answeredB
And cried aloud It is youE2
-
Then into my blood the word of my being thrilledB
Not a nerve but aware It is IA
Yet I could not tell my thought from the green of the grassT2
My bliss from the blue of the skyA
-
Overbrimmed overflowing I rose like one who has drunkU2
Of a radiance keener than wineV2
I stood on the marvellous earth and felt my bloodB
As the stream of a power divineV2
-
Laughter of children afar on the air came to meQ
And touched me softly homeW2
There were tears in me like trembling dew I knew notB
Where they had stolen fromV
-
Who is not my brother and who is not my sisterN
O wonder of human eyesR
Have I passed you by nor perceived how luminous in youE2
All infinity liesR
-
Love opened my eyes and opened my ears not oneS
But his soul is as mine is to meQ
I heard like a ripple around the world breakingE
The voices of children in gleeQ
-
I saw the beauty secret as starlit wellsX2
Treasured in the bosoms of the oldB
I heard like the whisper of leaf to leaf in the nightwindB
Hopes that the tongue never toldB
-
Was it the grass that quivered about me I feltB
Not that but the hearts beatingE
Close to my own unnumbered as blades of the grassT2
And the dead in the quick heart meetingE
-
And I knew the dreams of wandering sorrow and joyN2
Breathed in the sleep of the nightB
From the other side of the earth that for me was glowingE
To the round horizon's lightB
-
The earth that moves through the light and the dark for everN
As a dancer moves amongJ2
The maze of her sister stars with a silent speedB
In a dance that is always youngJ2
-
And the heart of my body knew that it shared in allY
It was there not alone nor afraidB
It throbbed in the life that can never be destroyedB
In the things Time never madeB
