I was contented with the warm silenceA
Sitting by the fire book on kneeB
And fancy uncentred afloat and astrayC
Idled from thought to thoughtD
Like a child picking flowers and dropping themE
In a meadow at playC
I was contented with the kind silenceA
When there invaded meB
Not a sound no there was no soundF
But awareness of a menaceG
Creeping up roundF
The little island of my mindH
A creeping up of gradual waves out of a seaB
With storm coming behindH
Wave on pale wave smile on inhuman smileI
Driven on by the black force of alien willJ
To drown my world to be the burialK
Of joy beauty and allL
That seemed impossible to killJ
Even the secret home that hope inheritedM
I sat in an unreal room aloneN
Befriending and familiar shapes were goneO
And I was seized with dreadP
-
Then I became restlessG
As if in bonds that must at any cost be burstQ
The very peace seemed to oppressR
I was imprisoned and athirstQ
And rose and crossed the floorS
Craving to front the naked outer nightQ
At the opened doorS
Stood a thin mist ghostly and motionlessG
-
Smell of the leaves rottingT
Breathed through a cold vapourS
Bitter to the nostrilJ
My feet stumbledQ
In my heart was a cryS
O for some single point of certitudeQ
I lifted up my face and saw the skyS
-
There where I stoodQ
Low mist clung to the earthU
But above pale and diminishedQ
Only the larger lights pierced the dim airS
I faced the NorthV
And far and faint over a shadowy pineW
That rose out of the mistQ
I saw the North Star shineW
-
I remembered sailors of oldQ
For whom unclouded nightQ
Was stretched above the dark MediterraneanX
A blue tapestry pricked with powdery goldQ
Where legendary presences shone brightQ
Each with a memory and a nameY
And under the luminous mazeZ
Steering by the North StarS
Ships to their harbour cameY
-
And now through thick silenceA
On the stifled fog possessed AtlanticA2
I was hearing distant or nearS
Muffled answer of horn to hornB2
The rocking clang of the buoy bellC2
Sound crossing sound to warnB2
Steamers that on their blinded motion stillJ
Unfaltering over seas invisibleK
Held to a silent clueD2
Because with the assurance of that starS
The needle points them trueD2
-
There was a voice whisperedQ
Ascend ascendQ
Out of the earthy vapour outQ
Of the invading doubtQ
Into deliverance into bareS
Heights of unmeasured airS
Utterly stilled I stoodQ
Climbing in dizzying thought without an endQ
To that magnetic lightQ
That affirmation of old certitudeQ
And pinnacled alone in the vast nightQ
My thought was thereS
-
Oh earth is goneO
My earth is lostQ
North Star North StarS
Dost thou fail meB
Thou art not what thou wastQ
And all I was is taken from my mindQ
For there is neither path nor directionX
For any thought to findQ
No North nor South nor East nor WestQ
But homelessness suspended out of timeE2
Where I had sought to climbE2
North Star it was no shroudQ
Of mist nor glory of overflowing sunX
It was no blotting curtain of blank cloudQ
But a thought in the mind that deposed theeB
-
Down down I sinkF2
Earth again holds meB
Again North Star I see thee shineW
But from the naked night I will not shrinkF2
And privately I takeG2
A courage for thy sakeG2
Because thou hast thy place and I have mineW
Because I still need theeB
Because thou need'st not meB
